Peru has become famous for its striped, candy-coloured mountains, but most travellers only discover on arrival that there is more than one. The two you can realistically visit from Cusco are Vinicunca, the world-famous Rainbow Mountain, and Palcoyo, its quieter and gentler cousin. They are not the same experience, and choosing wrong can turn a dream day into a hard one.
Here is an honest comparison so you pick the one that actually fits you.
The short answer
- Choose Vinicunca if you want the iconic postcard mountain, you are reasonably fit, and you do not mind company.
- Choose Palcoyo if you want an easier walk, far fewer people, and three rainbow mountains instead of one.
Vinicunca: the famous one
Vinicunca sits at roughly 5,000 metres above sea level, which makes it one of the highest places most visitors will ever walk. That altitude is the whole story of the day: the hike itself is not technical, but the thin air makes a moderate uphill walk feel much harder than it looks.
What to expect
- A long, uphill approach to the viewpoint, typically around an hour and a half at a slow pace.
- The single, dramatic striped ridge you have seen in photos, with the Ausangate glacier behind it.
- Company. Vinicunca is popular, and mid-morning is busy.
- Horses available for part of the route if the altitude becomes too much.
Palcoyo: the quiet alternative
Palcoyo is lower and far gentler. The walk is short and mostly flat, which makes it a realistic option for families, for travellers who are worried about altitude, or for anyone who simply does not want to spend the day gasping uphill.
What to expect
- A short, easy walk from the drop-off point to the viewpoints.
- Three rainbow-striped ridges rather than one, seen from a broad ridge walk.
- A striking stone forest of rock spires nearby that Vinicunca does not have.
- Noticeably fewer people.
Side by side
| Vinicunca | Palcoyo | |
|---|---|---|
| Altitude | Around 5,000 m | Lower than Vinicunca |
| Walking | Long uphill, demanding | Short and mostly flat |
| Scenery | One iconic striped ridge | Three ridges + stone forest |
| Crowds | Busy | Quiet |
| Best for | Fit hikers, the classic photo | Families, altitude worries, calm |
So which one should you choose?
Pick Vinicunca if: you want the picture everyone recognises, you have already spent a couple of days acclimatising in Cusco, and a steady uphill walk at altitude does not worry you.
Pick Palcoyo if: you have limited time to acclimatise, you are travelling with children or older family members, you have had trouble with altitude before, or you value quiet over fame.
Can you do both? Yes, on separate days, and some travellers do. If you only have one day, be honest about your fitness and your acclimatisation rather than choosing by reputation alone.
Acclimatise first, whichever you choose
Both mountains are far higher than Cusco, and Cusco itself is already at 3,400 m. Give yourself at least two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before either trip. Drink plenty of water, eat lightly the night before, and start slowly. Altitude is the single biggest reason people have a miserable day on these tours, and it is entirely avoidable with a little patience.
Best time to go
The dry season, roughly May to September, offers the most reliable skies and firmer ground. In the rainy months the colours can be beautifully saturated but cloud and mud are common, and snow occasionally covers the stripes entirely.
Whichever you choose, leave Cusco early. Both are long day trips, and the light and the weather are usually at their best in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Which rainbow mountain is easier, Vinicunca or Palcoyo?
Palcoyo, clearly. The walk is short and mostly flat, while Vinicunca involves a sustained uphill at around 5,000 m.
Is Palcoyo worth it if I have seen photos of Vinicunca?
Yes. Palcoyo offers three striped ridges and a stone forest, and you will share them with far fewer people.
Do I need to be very fit for Vinicunca?
Not an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking uphill slowly for over an hour at high altitude, and properly acclimatised.
Can children do these tours?
Palcoyo is the far more realistic option for families with young children, thanks to the shorter, flatter walk.
Which has fewer tourists?
Palcoyo, by a wide margin.
